ROGER FENTON (1819-69)
Dromedary
1855RCIN 2500559
This dromedary (a one-humped camel) is shown at work, carrying a sack and a rolled-up rug. There is little information on the number of camels used by the British during the war. One source states that the animals found it difficult to survive the cold months in the Crimea. This photograph was incorporated prominently into Barker’s painting, seen on the right-hand side of the work. Rather than showing a British serviceman on the camel, however, Barker has replaced him with a more exotic man, identified as a Montenegrin.
