This photograph is the third part of an extraordinary eleven-section panorama of the Plateau of Sevastopol. The panorama shows the full extent of the British camp and is technically a masterpiece. The viewer, reading the images from left to right, is taken from the military camps through the bleak Crimean landscape and is finally presented with the British cemetery at Cathcart’s Hill. It is a poignant sequence of images that begins with military heroism but ends with melancholy and sadness.
