GEORGE III, KING OF THE UNITED KINGDOM (1738-1820)
Syon House
c.1758-60RCIN 980237
This drawing is remarkable amongst George III’s early chalk drawings as it depicts a real, rather than an invented, view. In the centre of the composition, beyond the river Thames, is Syon House – the residence of the Duke of Northumberland – as seen from the royal gardens at Richmond across the river.
In this atmospheric chalk drawing, George III concentrates on creating a harmonious landscape, in the manner of the British artist Richard Wilson (1714 – 82), who painted a remarkably similar view at around the same time as the Prince.
