PRINCE ALBERT, PRINCE CONSORT

The garden of the Rosenau

dated Nov 1828

RCIN 981392

Schloss Rosenau©

Prince Albert was born, and spent much of his childhood, at the fortified medieval manor house called the Rosenau, near Coburg, the country residence of the Dukes of Coburg. Drawing and painting were part of Prince Albert’s education and in this example it appears that the young prince, aged nine, has depicted a familiar scene in the garden of the Rosenau. The wash drawing contains playful details, such as the two small children (doubtless intended to represent Albert and his elder brother Ernest) swinging on the climbing frame.
