HRH Princess Elizabeth and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh driving to Waterloo Station at the start of their honeymoon

20 Nov 1947

Gelatin silver print | 20.7 x 25.3 cm (image) | RCIN 2002415

The bride and groom were showered with rose petals as they left Buckingham Palace for Waterloo Station after the Wedding Breakfast. Despite the freezing November weather, they drove in an open carriage so that the crowds could see the newly married couple. Tucked under the rugs alongside their hot water bottles was Susan, one of the Princess’s favourite corgis, who accompanied them on the honeymoon.
