The miniature portrait of Prince Albert was commissioned by Queen Victoria soon after their engagement. She took a great interest in the progress of the painting and pronounced it ‘very like’ after a visit to Ross’s studio. The portrait of Queen Victoria was commissioned as a companion piece soon after.
