Queen Alexandra (1844-1925) when Princess of Wales
1863Watercolour over photograph on card | 14.2 x 11.2 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 420284
Although Princess Alexandra was given a suite of Brussels lace to wear for her wedding, Queen Victoria declared it inappropriate. She decreed that her dress must be entirely of British manufacture, trimmed with Honiton lace. This painted photograph shows Alexandra wearing the lace overlaid with swags of artificial orange blossom. Pinned to the sleeve is the badge of the Order of Victoria and Albert.
