Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were married in the small Tudor Chapel Royal, St James’s Palace, in a relatively private ceremony. Queen Victoria specifically requested that the word ‘obey’ remain as part of her vows, writing in her diary that she believed the marriage ceremony ‘ought to make an everlasting impression on everyone who promises at the Altar to keep what he or she promises’.
