Princess Victoria Mary of Teck (called May by her family) was the great-granddaughter of King George III through her mother, born Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge. In 1891 she was briefly engaged to the Prince of Wales’s eldest son Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence, who died of influenza in January 1892. On 3 May 1893 Princess May became engaged to his younger brother Prince George, Duke of York, with whom she is shown here. They were married in July.
