A study of the dress worn by the Duchess of Edinburgh for the marriage of the Grand Duchess Maria to Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh

Chevalier’s sketch gives a vivid impression of the silver and gem-set sarafan worn by all Russian imperial brides at their wedding. Lady Stanley, wife of the Dean of Westminster, recalled that ‘the small graceful head so childlike, must have ached with the immense weight of jewels’.
