NIKOLAI EGOROVICH SVERCHKOV (1817-98)
Alexander II, Emperor of Russia (1818-1881) with Edward VII (1840-1910) when Prince of Wales in a Troika at St Petersburg
1866RCIN 406576
Whether a recollection of a real event or an imagined scene, this painting demonstrates Sverchkov’s mastery of the sleigh scene. A prolific artist, he specialised in troika scenes – a symbol of Russia. The carefully modelled heads of the Emperor and the Prince were derived from contemporary photographs.
Presumably a gift from Alexander II to King Edward VII, when Prince of Wales.
