MARY THORNYCROFT (1814-95)

Grand Duchess Marie Alexandrovna, Duchess of Edinburgh (1853-1920)

signed & dated 1876

RCIN 2092

In her life, the Duchess had the distinction of being a Russian grand duchess (by birth), a British princess and royal duchess (by marriage), and the consort (and later widow) of a German sovereign duke. In spite of her status this portrait depicts the Duchess as a young 23-year old woman with simple drapery in a classical style.

Possibly commissioned by Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh.
