WILLIAM CORDEN THE YOUNGER (1819-1900)

Juliane, Princess of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (1781-1860)

1844

RCIN 407174

Copied by Corden in Coburg, this picture forms part of a group of family portraits commissioned by Queen Victoria to hang in her bedroom at Windsor Castle. The sitter, Queen Victoria’s aunt, married into the Romanov family in 1796 – although the marriage was short-lived. The artist of the original portrait described ‘the most lively exuberance’ of the sitter and the copy succeeds in capturing this vitality and youthfulness.

Commissioned by Queen Victoria.
