PETERHOF IMPERIAL LAPIDARY WORKSHOPS (1721-1933)

Paperweight

early nineteenth century

RCIN 53554

Smaller objects made of malachite by the Imperial Lapidary workshops at Peterhof made the material accessible to the wider population. The gilt-bronze mounts enclose porcelain plaques with views of the Monastery of St Alexander Nevsky and l’hôpital imperial des pauvres malades, both in St Petersburg.

Probably the paperweight given to Queen Victoria in 1880 by Grand Duke Alexei in memory of his mother, Maria Alexandrovna, consort of Emperor Alexander II
