RUSSIAN
Seal box
1749RCIN 46041
This box, embossed with the imperial double-headed eagle, was designed to contain the official wax seal of the imperial court. It would originally have been attached by cords to a presentation folder containing a new patent of nobility. Given its date this box was presented during the reign of Empress Elizabeth (1741–62), but the process of granting new titles had begun under Peter the Great in order to bring fresh blood to the nobility.
Probably acquired by King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra.
