ELIZABETH SOUTHERDEN BUTLER, LADY BUTLER (1846-1933)

The Roll Call

RCIN 405915

Painted nearly 20 years after the event, this picture is said to represent a roll call after the Battle of Inkerman. It powerfully conveys the suffering and camaraderie of the ordinary soldier, rather than celebrating military heroism. Queen Victoria made a point of showing it to Alexander II when he visited England in 1874.

Acquired by Queen Victoria, 1874.
