Olearius accompanied the Duke of Holstein’s trade embassy to Russia, and wrote a best-selling account of his visit. He was particularly interested in the religious festivals that he witnessed, including this Palm Sunday procession, recreating Christ’s Entry into Jerusalem on a donkey.
