FABERGÉ

Pair of decanters

before 1896

RCIN 100337

Pair of globular decanters, crimson glass engraved with rococo scrolls and foliage; silver mounted handles shaped as dolphins, heads forming spout and cover, tails forming handles.

Mounted-glass and porcelain objects were produced in Fabergé’s workshops in both St Petersburg and Moscow. There are a small number of pieces of glass and porcelain made by other makers — such as glass by Gallé and Tiffany and porcelain by Royal Doulton and the Rørstrand Manufactory — to which Fabergé applied silver mounts. These pieces are notable, not only for the combination of firms involved, but as good examples of the evolution of Fabergé’s style towards art nouveau.

Moscow silver mark of 91 zolotniks (before 1896); C. Fabergé in Cyrillic characters and Carl Fabergé's initials in Cyrillic characters
