Suite of furniture

This table and mirror, from a larger suite of furniture, are applied with the conjoined arms of Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh and Maria Alexandrovna, which indicates that the suite was probably a wedding gift. The furniture is illustrative of the revival of peasant handicrafts and native Russian motifs seen in all forms of Russian decorative art from the 1870s onwards. The maker is unknown but may have been of Belarussian origin. The survival of furniture of this type in Russia following the Revolution and Second World War is extremely rare.
