SIR DAVID WILKIE (1785-1841)
Abd-ul-Mejid (1823-1861), Sultan of Turkey
1840RCIN 407268
In 1840 Wilkie travelled to Turkey, the Holy Land and Egypt, seeking new inspiration for his art and a favourable climate for his health. This portrait of the Sultan of Turkey was painted in Constantinople. The Sultan was very particular about the likeness and on occasion took hold of the artist’s paintbrush to show the changes he wanted. Wilkie planned to present the portrait to Queen Victoria, but he died on his journey home, before he could do this.
