Donald Stewart and Charles Duncan

Queen Victoria commissioned Kenneth MacLeay, a successful miniature artist from Oban, to paint a series of large watercolour portraits of her favourite Scottish retainers at Balmoral. Donald Stewart, on the left, was Under-Forester and assistant to the Head Keeper and wears a kilt of Balmoral tartan. Charles Duncan, on the right, was a ghillie and Keeper and is shown in a kilt and plaid of Royal Stewart tartan. Commissioned by Queen Victoria
