On the accession of George III in 1760, Allan Ramsay was selected to paint the King's state, or official, portrait. Ramsay has depicted the young King in the sumptuous robes worn at his coronation at Westminster Abbey on 22 September 1761. Afterwards, Ramsay was responsible for producing the numerous copies of this portrait ordered by sovereigns, heads of state, colonial governors, ambassadors, corporations, institutions and courtiers.
