SIR DAVID WILKIE (1785-1841)
George IV's entry into Holyroodhouse
1822RCIN 913593
This is an early study for Wilkie’s large oil painting of the same subject which can be seen in the first room. It commemorates George IV’s visit to Scotland in 1822 when Wilkie witnessed the arrival of the King at the Palace of Holyroodhouse. The drawing shows the Duke of Hamilton kneeling before the King, presenting him with the keys of the Palace.
