This pair of tables by the Edinburgh firm Trotter, Young and Hamilton, was made for the Palace of Holyroodhouse, for the residence of Charles-Philippe, comte d'Artois (1757-1836), the future Charles X of France and the youngest brother of Louis XVI. The comte, who had incurred large debts, was offered refuge at Holyroodhouse in 1796, where he took advantage of the sanctuary it offered to debtors, and stayed until 1803.
