DAVID ALLAN (1744-96)
Piazza Navona, Rome
circa 1775RCIN 913355
This is one of ten drawings by Allan of the Carnival in Rome and, as with the others in the group, the architecture is reversed, suggesting that Allan executed them as designs for engravings. The English artist Paul Sandby purchased the drawings from Allan and published four as aquatints. Allan eventually settled in Edinburgh in 1779 and was appointed Master of the Trustees’ Academy.
Acquired by George IV when Prince Regent, 1812
