Prince William, Duke of Clarence, later William IV, was the third son of George III and Queen Charlotte. He succeeded his brother, George IV, in 1830. The Prince is about two years old in this portrait and is shown wearing ‘coats’, the type of long dress worn by young boys at this time. Probably painted for George III or Queen Charlotte
