JOHN UNDERWOOD [OF AYR]
'Tam O'Shanter' chair
1822RCIN 27942
This armchair celebrates the work of the Scottish poet Robert Burns. It is made from timber from the roof of the old Kirk at Alloway, Burns's birthplace. When the roof collapsed, the timbers were used to make items associated with Burns. The brass panels are engraved with Burns's poem Tam O'Shanter, written in 1790. The Kirk is the setting for much of the poem, in which Tam is chased by witches.
