Roberts visited the Middle East 1838-9, sailing up the Nile and travelling through Egypt and the Holy Land. His numerous watercolours provided the basis for the volumes of lithographs, published between 1843-9 and dedicated to Queen Victoria. An immediate success, the publication ensured that Roberts's views were seen by a wide audience and became the most popular and influential images of the Middle East of his time.
