Wilkie originally developed this composition to show an incident in the life of Christopher Columbus. This sketch shows that by October 1827 he had turned the subject into a meeting of guerillas in a mountain inn. In the finished painting, the figures have been reduced slightly in scale and set further back in the picture space in order to achieve a greater sense of depth. Purchased by HM The Queen in 1980.
