Mother-of-pearl tray

RCIN 11391

This card tray was carved in Canton (modern day Guangdong, China) and mounted in India. Carved shells with typical ‘Chinese’ scenes were produced for the export market. The gold mount was probably made in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, which had been a centre of production for mounted mother-of-pearl objects since the sixteenth century.
