Vitruvius’s Ten Books on Architecture is the only treatise on the arts to survive from classical antiquity, and was much studied by the architects and theoreticians of the High Renaissance. It was first published in the original Latin around 1490, fully illustrated in 1511, and in many translations from 1521 onwards.
