AFTER GIAMBOLOGNA (1529-1608)
Nessus abducting Deianira
1625RCIN 35445
Giambologna was especially interested in complex figure compositions. With the colossal marble Rape of a Sabine Woman (Florence, 1583) he created a tower of three figures with no unsatisfactory viewpoint. This related composition, which was only possible in bronze, dates from 1575. It depicts the moment just before Nessus is killed by Hercules’s poisoned arrow.
