ANNIBALE CARRACCI (BOLOGNA 1560-ROME 1609)

Polyphemus hurling a rock

c.1597-8

RCIN 901944

After completing the Camerino in Palazzo Farnese, Rome (see no. 113, above right), Annibale Carracci frescoed the adjacent sculpture gallery. This is a study for Polyphemus hurling a rock at Acis, at one end of the vault. Annibale’s frescoes in the Galleria were the seminal work of the Baroque in Rome, and with studies such as this he single-handedly revived the art of life drawing in the city. No. 114
