This drawing and the next come from the collection of Cassiano dal Pozzo, one of the great figures of seventeenth-century Rome. Cassiano collected thousands of drawings of antiquities, architecture and natural history to form a ‘paper museum’. He was more interested in the details of daily life than in the great events of antiquity, and he owned no fewer than thirty-two drawings of the triclinium or Roman dining room.
