JACOPO BASSANO (C. 1510-1592)

The Adoration of the Shepherds

c.1546

RCIN 405772

The birth of Christ takes place in a ruined temple, symbolising Judaism being superseded by Christianity. The unusually prominent goat may allude to Christ as the ‘scapegoat’ who carries the sins of the world. Bassano borrowed elements from works by Titian and Dürer, adding a particularly direct naturalism. Acquired by Charles I No. 72
