PAOLO FARINATI (1524-1606)
The Emperor Vespasian
c.1560-80RCIN 904995
Paolo Farinati produced many decorative cycles for the private residences of Verona, though only a small proportion survive. This is one of a set of eleven known drawings by the artist depicting rulers of ancient history, including Julius Caesar, Alexander the Great, King Sapor of Persia, and Attila the Hun. They may have been intended to be painted as the decoration of a library, traditionally furnished with portraits of great men.
