GIOVANNI BENEDETTO CASTIGLIONE (1609-64)
The head of a bearded man, wearing a turban
c.1645-50RCIN 903946
Castiglione seems to have invented the monotype process, in which an image is drawn with oils or printing ink onto a metal plate, from which a few paper impressions can then be taken. Here he also scraped details into the ink, most noticeably in the turban, beard and fur collar, and applied additions to the print with both ink and a brown wash.
