GIULIO ROMANO (ROME C. 1499-MANTUA 1546)
The Triumphal Feast of Scipio
c. 1532RCIN 991367
Giulio Romano designed a series of tapestries on the life of the Roman general Scipio Africanus, which were woven in Brussels on the basis of finished drawings (rather than full-scale cartoons) sent by Giulio from Mantua. Ten of the tapestries depicted Scipio’s triumphal procession after the Second Punic War. This scene shows the feast held in the Capitol after the procession, with Scipio at the head of the table to the left.
