LORENZO LOTTO (VENICE C. 1480-LORETO 1556)
Portrait of a Bearded Man
c. 1515-18RCIN 405753
Lotto was one of the most inventive and idiosyncratic painters of the sixteenth century. His typical clarity is seen in the contrast between the sitter’s pale moustache and his darker hair and the tactile effect of the pleats of his doublet. The intensity of this frontal pose is softened by the Venetian contours of Lotto’s mature style.
