Portrait of Margherita Paleologo

c.1531

RCIN 405777

This portrait depicts a fashionable noblewoman in a magnificent dress, created from interlaced bands of black fabric edged with gold. She is probably Margherita Paleologo (1510–1566), Isabella d’Este’s daughter-in-law, at the time of her marriage to Federico Gonzaga, 1st Duke of Mantua. Giulio Romano was at that time Federico’s court artist.
