GIROLAMO MUZIANO (1528-92)

St Jerome

c. 1580

RCIN 990440

This is a study for Muziano’s altarpiece of St Jerome preaching in the wilderness, painted for St Peter’s, Rome, and later transferred to Santa Maria degli Angeli. The pose is based on the prophet Ezekiel in Michelangelo’s Sistine ceiling, but the clinging drapery and heavy limbs emulate Michelangelo’s later style.
