This is a study for a fresco in the Poggi Chapel of San Giacomo Maggiore, Bologna. The Gospel of St Luke relates that the angel Gabriel appeared to the priest Zacharias, telling him that his elderly wife Elizabeth would bear him a son. Here however the angel swoops down into the temple to announce the news to Elizabeth herself.
