PARMIGIANINO (PARMA 1503-CASALMAGGIORE 1540)

The Coronation of the Virgin. Verso: Miscellaneous studies

c.1535

RCIN 902185

The commission to decorate the church of Santa Maria della Steccata in Parma overshadowed the last decade of Parmigianino’s short and mercurial life. The fresco in the apse was to depict the Coronation of the Virgin. In this sketch the Madonna is borne up by angels towards Christ, seated on a rainbow and holding out the crown towards her. Parmigianino never began work on the painting.
