BARTOLOMEO PASSAROTTI (1529-1592)

The Funeral, Burial and Assumption of the Virgin

?

RCIN 906037

The body of the Virgin Mary lies on its bier, surrounded by the Disciples. Sprawled in front is a Pharisee who tried to tip the body from the bier, only for his hand to petrify and break off. In the crypt below, the Virgin’s body is laid to rest, while above her soul is carried to heaven. The drawing may have been a proposal for the high altarpiece of the cathedral in Cremona.
