The Holy Family with Pope Clement VII
c.1530RCIN 904813
Sebastiano del Piombo moved to Rome in 1511 and became a close associate of Michelangelo. This study towards an unexecuted painting shows the Christ Child leaning on a globe, symbolising his dominion over the world. St Joseph introduces the kneeling Clement VII, whom Sebastiano painted and drew many times, always emphasising his prominent nose and cheekbones.
