MARCELLUS LAROON THE YOUNGER (1679-1772)
A Dinner Party
c. 1719-25RCIN 403539
This is an imaginary satirical scene of fashionable life comparable to a Restoration comedy. We can recognise the types: a red-faced gardener scrounging wine; a young black slave; a fat and worldly clergyman; a lady with a solemn, wedge-faced lover whispering in her ear; a servant boy echoing the forms of the dog behind him – presumably an insolent young puppy.
