Princess Victoire (1822–57) was Queen Victoria’s much loved first cousin. In this slight and light-hearted sketch Landseer has shown how much of a person can be appreciated without seeing their face. The sitter is clearly sensitive, pensive and dreamy – perhaps even a little like the spaniel she so resembles.
