Flamstead was the first Astronomer Royal, appointed in 1675. His life’s work, a complete catalogue of the 3,000 stars visible from Greenwich, was published in 1725 after his death. This atlas followed and was the largest and most accurate of its time. The constellation Virgo was frequently identified with Ceres the Roman goddess of agriculture, or with the Virgin Mary.
