EUSTACHE LE SUEUR (1616-55)
Caligula depositing the Ashes of his Mother and Brother in the Tomb of his Ancestors
c.1647RCIN 404983
Le Sueur was regarded as a French Raphael, telling classical stories with idealised and expressive figures. Though remembered as a monster, Caligula began his rule as a popular Emperor, especially impressing the Roman people with the piety with which he buried his mother and brother, both murdered by his predecessor, Tiberius.
