Between 1694 and 1696, William III had the King’s Gallery built as a space for the display of some of the finest paintings in the Royal Collection. In 1725, George I commissioned William Kent to redecorate this gallery entirely. Kent designed new picture frames, thinned down the hang and made it symmetrical. He also decorated the ceiling with scenes from the Homer’s Odyssey. The picture hang visible here dates from the reign of George III. Probably acquired by George IV Cat. 33
